Provisional syllabus for the Introduction to Political Economy 401 The aim of the course By this course, it is meant to give students the basic concepts of political economy and major theoretical schools or approaches in alternatives and development models of different political economies of different region across the world. The class is divided into two sections: First part will focus on theoretical discussion of political economy and the second part will focus on the application of the theories discussed in the first part in the examples of different regions and countries. Teaching methods The lecturer will utilize a combination of different teaching methods like lecturing, seminar discussions, student presentation, debates, guest lecture etc and will be open for students’ feedback about the teaching methods and lecturer’s own abilities. Homeworks All students are expected to do reading assignments for each class session and actively participate in class discussions. In the second part of the semester, students are expected to write a paper (7-10 pages long, double-spaced, 12 sized, in Arial Mon or Times New Roman Mon on the decided topics) and give presentation on it preferably in teams of three or four. Presentations and papers are evaluated separately. Evaluations The class attendance 10% Participation in discussion 10% In class homeworks 20% Review of theories 20% Final papers (presentations) 40% 1 a Introduction to syllabus, purpose of the class, evaluation procedure, teacher’s expectation of the class and students, student discipline during the class session etc blah blah. b Beginning of class: Conceptualizing the major framework of the class that is to clarify the concepts of politics, economy or economics and the meaning of political economy as a whole (provisional and several ), mentioning of major approaches later to be elaborated on. Homework: Pick one thinker of whatever period, and give comprehensive analysis of about his thoughts or ideas about political economy that is the interrelationship of economy and politics.
